Is it possible to alternate text styles in a SINGLE form field in Microsoft Word 2010? (i.e.
first line is normal, second line is bold, third line is normal, fourth is bold, etc.
etc.)
What other restricted-editing options are available for this circumstance?

If you're using legacy form fields, the entire field takes on whatever style or formatting was applied to it before the form was protected.
You can't change the style or any directly applied formatting inside the field.
If you need that sort of flexibility, use a rich text content control (assuming that the document will be used only in Word 2007 or later).
If you do, it's advisable to replace all the legacy form fields with content controls, because a mixture of the two
doesn't always work well.

If you failed to fix it, another option is to call Microsoft and walk through the process with a technician. To do this, dial "1-800-936-5700". Explain the error that you received and the steps in the update process during which it was displayed. The technician will be able to walk through the steps from getting a new product key to finishing the installation.
