After upgrading from Vista to Windows 7, Keyboard number keys and symbols no longer work

After upgrading from Vista to 7 I find that I can no longer use the number keys or symbols keys.  As you can imagine this makes passwords and email addresses interesting.  I have tried reloading the drivers, switching to the dvorak keyboard, all with no
luck.  Any ideas?  I'm running a compaq C60-420us windows 7 32bit system.  I would appreciate any help.  Thanks
