Best method for destructive ssd firmware update
Hi
I have Win 7 64 bit Ultimate running on a G.Skills Falcon II 128Gb ssd drive with a 1TB ordinary hard drive for data etc on a Gigabyte H57M board with an Intel i5 processor. I would like to update the firmware for the ssd as I am experiencing wakeup problems
from various hibernation and power saving modes and I suspect the ssd. Unfortunately the G.Skills firmware update process is destructive (reformating the ssd) and so I need to backup and restore. I also understand that there are some sector alignment issues
for ssds and so a simple copy won't suffice. Plus, to add interest it appears that the Falcon II needs to be in the drive 0 slot and in IDE mode ie not AHCI/Sata for the firmware upgrade. I hope I have got that right. In their customer friendly way G.Skills
seem to assume everyone has access to a spare computer capable of handling the ssd and so don't provide any hints at all on the backup process.
I haven't got another computer capable of handling the ssd so I need to use the existing computer to host the process. I can think of two ways using Win 7 Ultimate. A third option might be possible using third party software and a bootable cd/dvd.
Option 1: Using Windows 7 is it possible to back up the ssd (remember it is the boot drive) on my 1 Tb drive (keeping in mind the sector alignment issues) and use a system restore disk or original install disk (I bought the full licence version) to do the
firmware upgrade on the ssd and then run the restore process to rewrite my ssd without having to reinstall everything?
Option 2: I updated the ssd firmware at the time of building my computer by installing Win 7 temporarily on my hdd and using it as the boot drive. I then did a fresh install with the ssd as a boot drive and then reformatted the hdd. But this is another
story. I probably have enough memory spare on the 1 Tb hdd to backup the ssd, do a temporary install of win 7 in a new partition (possible?), update the firmware and do a restore from the backup to the ssd. Messier than Option 1. I don't know enough to
judge if this is possible. Is it please?
Which would be the better option please? Is Windows 7 Ultimate really the ultimate?
Thanks for getting this far on my complex problem.
Regards
Ray
