How to Fix - 7 Starter faulty Desktop icons when left clicked?

7 Starter faulty Desktop icons when left clicked

After an update today my desktop icons are faulting every time I left click them.
I have tried deleting them and then reinstalling from the start menu to no avail.
If I right click and then click open they work fine.
If I click the programs from
the menu they work fine.
  Can you suggest a solution.

Hi,

1.
Did you make any software changes to the computer recently?
2.
Is that an issue while opening all the programs?
3.
Are you able to open a particular file in the correct program? For example a word document in MS Office word and so on.
4.
Do you have the proper icon images?

Method 1.
This seems to be an issue with the file associations.
Follow the below link that will automatically fix the file associations ‘When you run an .exe file on a Windows Vista-based or Windows 7-based computer, the file may start a different program’:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505

If you are able to fix the file associations, you should run a Malware scan on your computer to check if this is caused by a virus infection.
You can follow the below link and run a Malware scan on your computer:

Method 2.
If the above method does not help in resolving the issue I would recommend you to perform a system restore and check.
Refer to the articles below for steps and more information on System Restore.

Hope this helps.

In this method we will try to Boot in Safe mode with Networking and see if the error still persists.

  • Search "MSCONFIG" and Open.
  • Click on Boot Tab
  • Tick Safe Boot in Boot Option
  • Select Network.
  • Click Apply and OK.
  • Reboot your System.
